NOTES FROM THE VINEYARD The 2018 vintage at Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley marked a return to the typical cool and marine-influenced patterns that produce beautifully nuanced Pinot Noir. The growing season was one of consistency, with fog-covered mornings, warm afternoons and no major heat events. As a result, the natural diversity of blocks, clones and soils at Bien Nacido was fully expressed with developed flavor profiles at moderate sugar levels. The harvest window in 2018 was quite long, lasting almost a month from the time we started picking Pommard clone on August 29 to when we finished with the lower sections of own-rooted Martini clone from Block N on September 24. The 2018 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir is a classic example of this famed vineyard with all the cool-toned red berry fruits, forest floor and ethereal floral elements that make the site so complex and compelling.
