AA Badenhorst Family Red 2010

2010 AA Badenhorst Red Blend

Vineyards and vines: small parcels of selected fruit are sourced from various vineyards on our farm Kalmoesfontein, the Swartland area and the greater Paardeberg mountain.

The 2010 vintage was characterised by very low volumes from our vineyards and only 8000L was bottled from this excellent harvest.

Grapes: Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault, Tinta Barocca

The 2010 AA Badenhorst is our 5th vintage and as a winemaker it is very satisfying to release a wine of this quality following the wonderful 2009.  The wine has the potential to age very gracefully for the next decade or so. The tannins are prominent and well intergrated and refreshing as a number of the parcels were picked quite early. The aromas are brooding with complex notes of pepper, liquorice, perfume and black cherries. The palate entry is quite dense with lavender and dark berry fruit. The finish is dry with well spread tannins ending with savoury and currant flavours.

Total production 12 000 bottles.

AA Badenhorst Family White 2008

"Wild and windblown and intriguing" - Jancis Robinson

Jancis Robinson:"Pears and a touch of oak on the nose, honey and thyme. Something wild and windblown and intriguing about this unusual white blend. It tastes of wild honey and aromatic herbs and dried grasses, with a touch of white pepper, soft citrus and pear. Beautifully textured - creamy - with real intensity and finely woven. 14.5%. Drink 2010-15" 17.5/20 points

Wine Spectator:"Broad and ripe, offering gorgeous flavours of white peach, quince and melon that stay well-defined, with floral, blanched almond and green fig notes adding further length and dimension on the finish. Drink now through 2011." 92 points

John Platter:"Elegant power, subtle weight and texture, nothing gauche. Open fermentation & only seasoned oak allows endless chalky, tarragon-scented features centre stage"**** 4.5 Stars

Hamish Anderson (Head Sommelier at The Tate Britain):"There is an argument that in times of diet and detox we should drink less, but better. The trouble comes when you open the bottle and find it hard to have only one glass. This blend of varieties has weight, spice and dried herbs, but above all it is a wine of texture and interest that demands your attention."

AA Badenhorst Family White 2010

Grapes: Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier ,Verdehlo, Chardonnay , Colombard , Grenache Gris, Semillon, Clairette Blanche and Palomino!!!

Vinification:

The Palomino is usually the picked first at low sugar levels followed by the other varietals in quick succession – normally within two weeks all 12 varietals are safely in the cellar fermenting together in 60-year old 1200L foudres.

Maturation: We only use old 1200L foudres for the fermentation and maturation of 13 months. After this, the wines are racked and blended in a single concrete tank with all their lees and left for another 6 – 8 months months before bottling.

The final makeup of the blend varies slightly each year. This will always be the case as we discover new amazing parcels of fruit or refine the final blend.

We feel that Chenin Blanc is best suited to be the heart of the blend and that is why it forms the biggest portion of the blend. The aromas are very complex and change considerably in the glass. Perfume, spice, tea, stone fruit and citrus blossoms are some of the notes that can be detected. In the mouth the texture and ripeness and gentle tannins result in a wine that has incredible length and complex flavour profile.  The wine also has wonderful fruit volume characterised by stone fruit and mineral flavours. The finish is long and has slight phenolic edges supporting the fruit through the entire length of the wine.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2013

The 2013 spent time on its lees in concrete tanks and this important part of the maturation of the wine shows in the incredible texture and palate weight of this wine. The aromas are flinty with honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes.

The 2013 vintage was quite exceptional in terms of quality and ripening conditions leading up to picking and the resulting wine is quite nice. I think this is our best vintage of Secateurs Chenin Blanc we have produced to date.

AA Badenhorst Secateurs Rosé 2013

Maturation: We have made only 1700 cases of this wine and it’s now ready to drink. It was clarified naturally and the rough filtration was minimal, so it my throw a slight deposit over time which, of course, is harmless.

Secateurs – shape our bushvines during the winter pruning and are used to pick the ripe grapes in summer. Our family has, for the last three generations, nurtured our vines so that they can produce fruit of integrity. This is a truly unique rosé as it was made from very old vines and really displays the minerality that characterises the wines from our farm. The aromas are complex red fruits, spice, rose water, currants and the palate is generous and textured with a long finish.

Barista Coffee Pinotage 2012

The coffee flavours in this wine come purely from the wine: real coffee is no more used in its production than there is cats’ pee in Sauvignon Blanc. The coffee flavours are accentuated by judicious oaking and choice of yeast plus Pinotage attributes.  Through the wizardry of fermentation, our Barista Pinotage derives its rich aroma and flavour of coffee from French oak and carefully-chosen and harvested grapes.

The term “barista” refers to people who specialise in making espresso-based coffees, so calling our unique Coffee Pinotage “Barista” makes perfect sense.

“Barista art” involves decorating your cappucino with intricate coffee-powder images. But with Barista wine, the art is in the bottle. Because we don’t add coffee to our wine, we’ve simply discovered a magical way to amplify and release these unique aromas and flavours.

TASTING NOTES

A wine of an intense violet red colour with aromas of great complexity: figs and ripe plums, harmoniously accompanied by notes of caramel and walnut. Rich on the palate, powerful, unctuous, with an extraordinary balance of alcohol, acidity and sugar that reaffirms the aromas perceived on the nose, together with all of the strength of the terroir (altitude, temperature range and sun). It reveals optimum persistence and a perfect assemblage with the Allier oak. All of the alcohol and sweetness come entirely from the over-ripened grape.

Bodega Chacra 1932 Pinot Noir 2009
Chacra’s oldest vineyard, planted in 1932 is composed of three hectares of ungrafted, pre-phlloxera vines producing tiny yields. As with the Barda, berries are de-stemmed by hand prior to fermenting. Still tight, linear and slightly tannic this is beautifully layered with very fine fruit flavours which with a little more time in bottle will evolve fabulously. Grand Cru quality without doubt. Other reviews and comments: Dark and ripe, delivering alluring blackberry and raspberry fruit, but stays racy and fresh, with lots of licorice, graphite, violet and anise notes rippling through the lengthy, well-focused finish. Bodega Chacra 1955 Pinot Noir 2009
From Chacra’s six hectare 1955 vineyard, vinified in whole bunches and given less than 20% new oak, this is so beautifully textured (in the same vein as Thibault Liger-Belair’s wines) with rich berry fruit, it is still reserved at first but then builds to a wonderful crescendo on the finish.

Other reviews and comments
This is tightly focused, displaying a pure, snappy core of red currant, red licorice and sagebrush, backed by a racy finish. Bright acidity is well-integrated throughout, and this should flesh out nicely with modest cellaring. Drink now through 2012   91/100

Bodega Noemia J. Alberto Malbec 2010

The winemaking

We began harvesting J. Alberto the 16th and finished the 26th of March. We divided the 4 hectares into 5 different parcels, meaning that we separated the plots following the different types of soil. We also picked them at different times according to their phenolic and sugar concentrations. What does this mean? It really means that we are getting to know our vineyards better and experience is truly the main factor in making the best wines possible with the lowest alcohol percentage possible. We find that a high alcohol (more than 14,5%) can sometimes mask the true nature of the wine and affects the flavors of the soils and sites, which contribute to the wine.

J. Alberto tastes at its best with white meat and game but can also be appreciated with the sturdier types of fish!

It is best to serve the wine at 16 Celsius; the equivalent of 60 Fahrenheit.

The wine will continue to improve 12 hours after being uncorked.

The vineyard
The vineyard is 1.5 hectares. The vines were planted in 1932. The vines are pre phelloxera period, “pied franco” and Massale selection, meaning that each vine is genetically different, unlike the common clonale type.
All of our 11 hectares of estate vineyards are both cultivated organically Bio-Dynamically and are certified by Argencer & Demeter. On the farm we produce ourselves 7 out of 8 Bio-Dynamic preparations (502,503,504,506,507) with exclusively our own raw material. We also do our own horn manure (500) and Bio-Dynamic composts.

Only 5,860 bottles and 70 Magnums were produced.

NB. As the wine is a 100% natural and unfiltered; it may present some harmless deposits in the bottle.

Matching the wine
The classic serving for Noemía is lamb, better even if it is from Patagonia!
Please serve at 16 Celsius, the equivalent of 60 Fahrenheit.

After uncorking the bottle, the wine will evolve constantly for the 48 hours that follow.

Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 2009

2009 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir

2009 shows all the attributes of distinguishing itself as another player within these four year cycles! Bouchard Finlayson Pinot noirs are clearly terroir driven by the knowing impact of our heavy Malmesbury Shale soils, which impart firm structure and robust flavour statements in each vintage. This flavour quality is further enhanced by our practice of implementing high- density closely planted vines to encourage competition between individual vines!

This bottling is rich with luscious soft tannins and dark-coloured forest fruits, deftly balanced on a cord of lingering plum and raspberry delights. Expected to age with appealing composure.

Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal 2009
2009 Hannibal

The concept of Hannibal stands by its original design of mixing French and Italian cultivars together. Vintage 2009 was predicted to offer stunning results and two years later there is no disappointment. The essence and soul of this Italian, French blend is captured in the pitching of six grape cultivars into one wine. The foundation is based on Italian Sangiovese which at 38% is its principle component!

All these cultivars are grown on the home territory Hemel-en-Aarde Valley terrior which is composed of heavy clay soils. In dry years such as 2009 these soils offer red wines of bold composition and abundant complexity. This vintage is comprised of Sangiovese 38%, Pinot noir 18%, Nebbiolo 16%, Shiraz 15%, Mouvedré 10% and Barbera 3%.

This bottling enjoys plenty of character it is rich, polished with red and black wild berry fruit flavours. Layered with hints of gentle oak leaning light on textured fruit acid and refined tannins driven by a long mineral aftertaste!

Bouchard Finlayson Missionvale Chardonnay 2009

2009 Missionvale Chardonnay

A dry rewarding vintage for this Chardonnay, which is year by year recognized for its characteristic layered “seamless” quality.

The name originates from the historical mission hospital established by Moravian Missionary Peter Leitner who adopted this beautiful valley to establish a place of caring for the infirm – finally described as a leper colony.

A very distinctive and specific terroir component reflects true to type and the tradition of maintaining 30 % new best French Oak with a total of seven months maturation.

This wine presents pages of different taste sensations.  First creamy yeast, followed by mild wood tones surrounded by vanilla and aromatic layers of apricot and cantaloupe. Finally resonating a long citrus and quince finish.  Longevity and ageing will enhance completely!

Bouchard Finlayson Tete de Cuvee Pinot Noir 2006

To build on these ideal conditions I have taken advantage of this opportunity to make a special blend by utilizing the best barrels in the cellar for a smaller unique bottling!  These limited release bottlings are called Tête de Cuvée. In this instance 15 barrels were used.

Vintage 2006 has followed admirably after the successful 2005. Excellent quality grapes picked over a ten day period. Great natural acidities and rewarding grape sugars brought a smile to the team.

Deftly balanced, rich, dark-coloured with rich plum and pretty floral, fruity aromatics. Luscious tannins which call one back into the glass - very appealing on the polished after taste!

Pinot noir is the most food flexible varietal.  Its richness comes from a multitude of layers of flavour. Enjoy with fish, poultry, game and red meat dishes!

Brunello di Montalcino 2004

The Brunello di Montalcino was one of the first wines that earned the designation DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and was the first Italian wine that has earned the appellation DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). This wine is made exclusively from grapes of Sangiovese Grosso  and is truly exceptional in every aspect.  Importantly, the weather details and richness of calcareous clay soil give the grapes a unique flavor. Another important factor is the expertise that made the production in this region, respecting the characteristic wine maturation in large oak barrels for at least two years, and recently also in French Barriques. Here the production techniques are handed down from generation to generation

All processes of production, refinement and bottling must take place in the municipality of Montalcino. Respecting tradition, our Brunello matures in large oak casks. Our Brunello characteristics: intense ruby red, aging gets Orange tints, tending to garnet red; intense taste with aromas of cherry and raspberry, young but with significant presence of tannin, peculiarity of the tendril, rigorous ageing, elegant, refined and rich.

Very solid, creamy, svelte nose with dense black fruit and chocolate. Quite charry and smoky. The palate has masses of concentration. Really grippy and mouthfilling, with a lovely juiciness cutting through the solidity of the fruit. Long and pure.

Ernie Els Big Easy Chenin Blanc 2013

Tasting Notes
This 100% Chenin Blanc in 2013 oozes with ripe mango, litchi and guava. Layers of spice and a steely acidity add to the sleek texture and powerful embrace; it is certainly Big, and yet ’Easy’. Classic Loire-like dried straw and wet-pebble notes give a slight savoury component to the pure racy fruit. The finish is full and long, leaving your palate with a sensation of peaches and cream. A dreamy wine with the structure to develop over the next 2 years.

Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Tasting Notes
The 2011 is a brooding yet fine vintage. Pure-fruited cassis on the nose open to a fine balance of dark chocolate, wet earth, delicate spice and dried herbs. The palate has a dark inky intensity punched by a core of mineral finesse and all wrapped by a broad-shouldered finish. The tannins are burly and taught, but will easily integrate with time as this decadent Cabernet Sauvignon will age well for a decade. Serious yet sumptuous.

Tasting Notes

The 2011 Merlot is a tempered, finely tuned beauty that shows great balance between seriousness and drinkability. Baked plums, smoked beef and chocolate on the nose lead to a juicy black currant strewn palate. A hint of soy sauce adds savouriness and complexity to the powerful, plush fruity core. The tannins have grip but yet are finely etched into a medium body, leading to a long fruity finish.

Ageing Potential

Sumptuous now, it will become even silkier with a few years aging.

Ernie Els Proprietors Blend 2010

Tasting Notes
The 2010 dances in the glass with a bright purple-sheen and dense crimson body. A subtle note of toasty-oak is yet to integrate into the potent morello cherry strewn bouquet. Further complexity of graphite, salami and bacon notes balance an intense floral lift, whilst whiffs of mint and chocolate finally drift slowly through to a supple, layered palate. A lacy, sweet-fruited cassis-cocktail stuns the palate all wrapped up with rich but etched tannins on the finish. Broader than the emphatic 2009, 2010 shows more of the Bordeaux varietal mix over its savoury Shiraz component.
Ageing Potential
Drink now and over the next 8 years.

Ernie Els Proprietors Blend 2011
Tasting Notes
A terrific vintage for Syrah where the warmer conditions assisted in an incredibly powerful, yet finely tuned wine. Inky purple with a black core, the nose opens to smoked beef, dense blueberry, a touch of cassis and hints of scorched earth. The palate is plush and inviting with ingrained dark chocolate, gamey spice and even a hint of black truffle. The polished tannins are slightly more open than the 2010, as they appear to be coated with eternal layers of sweet fruit. The finish is long and clear with a freshness and savoury edge balancing the purity of fruit. Utterly balanced for immediate enjoyment, it will age well for up to a decade.
Ageing Potential
Taut and alluring at the moment, time will bring even more complexity and pleasure.

The 2010 Syrah has a dense, pitch-black core with a vivid purple hue. The nose is magical, opening up with a potent fireworks display of intense blueberries, pepper ham and warm toast. The purity of fruit and brightness illuminates a plush palate, interwoven with luxurious cotton wool-like tannins. Almost thick in texture, the layered finish crescendos in a sweet spice and wood-smoke ensemble.

Ernie Els Signature 2007

With a deep black core and bright ruby rim, the Ernie Els Signature 2007 is slightly more light-footed and open than the brooding 2006, but by no means evades its suave personality. The large Cabernet Sauvignon component dominates with rich blackcurrants, whilst the four other Bordeaux varieties contribute with exotic hints of mint, pencil shavings, dark olive and rosemary. Full bodied and punchy, the lushes tannic grip is reigned in by a tightly wound finish that seems endless.

Tasting Notes

From one of the greatest vintages in memory, the 2009 Signature is even more emphatic than before, sure to make a statement everywhere. The enthralling nose is deeply rich with a myriad of black currant, coffee and smoked meat notes. Of the 5 Bordeaux varieties, the Cabernet Franc adds lead pencil and mineral notes, with a hint of spicy oak sure to integrate with age. The palate is full-bodied and decadent, reminding one of a Belgian chocolate fondant with blackberry coulee. Etched, weighty tannins finally coat suave, lush and pure fruit complexity. Exquisitely balanced and long.

Luddite Shiraz 2006

Slightly more foursquare, with a more obvious layering of spice and Sandalwood, and more peppery and meaty notes coming through here. The palate has a more density than the 2005, at least at this stage, and there’s a sense of bigger, sweeter, more voluptuous wine here. Plenty of dry extract, but the sweetness is lovely. Bigger and quite different in many ways to the 2005, but a another lovely wine. 93/100.

Luddite Shiraz 2007

93 pts Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (ST)
Bright red-ruby. Knockout syrah nose combines berries, mocha, cocoa, pepper and sexy fynbos hints, all lifted by a floral element. Very rich but suave, with lovely integrated acidity energizing the flavors of blackberry, chocolate and bacon fat. Wonderfully silky and light on its feet. Classically dry and very young wine, with a superb future ahead of it. Most of the fruit that goes into this wine now comes from the cool Bot River region. This vintage of this consistently terrific shiraz, which is bottled under the Luddite label in South Africa, seems more refined than earlier releases.

91 pts Robert Parker Jr’s The Wine Advocate (NM)
The aromatics on the 2007 Shiraz remain a little muted despite rigorous coaxing, though eventually one can eke out blackberry and boysenberry notes. However, the palate is well balanced with velvety, fleshy tannins and succulent red currant and cranberry fruit. One expects the finish to be powerful and overbearing. On the contrary, it is composed and refined, attesting to some competent winemaking. I suggest cellaring this away for a couple of years. Drink 2013-2018+

Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red

LOT NUMBER 59

Lot 59 is the latest release of Old Vine Red, our trademark blend that was first released 34 years ago in the early days of Marietta. Lot 59 carries on the tradition of consistency and quality with loads of ripe berries on the nose followed by a briery note reminiscent of blackberry leaf. The color is deep ruby, and the mouthfeel is full, rich and supple. The wine gives way to palate coating tannins that provide a textured, soft finish.

Marietta Cellars Petite Sirah 2009

"Our 2009 Petite Sirah is as rich and dark as ever, but the more we work with Petite Sirah, the more we find there to be a wonderful elegance to this big natured wine. The nose is dark and deep with black and blue berries, black cherries, dark chocolate, minerals, earth, and mild wood and cellar notes. The mouth feel is dense. There are layers of blackberries and blueberries, and then brighter tones of concentrated cherry with a little spice. The mid-palate and finish are very full, rich, and round yet the finish is so balanced with firm tannins and acidity that the wine manages to stay light on its feet. Petite Sirah can age for decades when this balanced, but at about 8-10 years ours seems to find its sweet spot... if you can wait that long."

Marietta Cellars Zinfandel 2011

The 2011 vintage is a pure expression of Sonoma County. We blend largely from our Alexander Valley Ranch with fruit from Dry Creek and Russian River to provide a Zinfandel with great fruit, balance and structure. Hints of cherry, cedar and raspberry are prominent from opening with a stone minerality afterward to add to the complexity. The mouth feel is full and juicy, but not heavy. This is a layered wine, with a succulent center, tannins for structure and balanced acidity.

Mas Candi Quattre Xarel.los 2009

QX quatre xarel.los (four xarel.los) is a monovarietal wine originating from vines as old as 54-60 years, from 4 different vineyards.

This wine has the hallmarks of a classic white wine, with great ageing potential.  The fruit, acid, oak and alcohol are in perfect balance and, while this wine is only but young, it already justifies its position as a great alternative to top-end chardonnays and its price.  Superb!

Only the very best grapes with the optimum level of ripeness were selected for this wine. All harvesting was by hand into into 15 kg baskets. The grapes were destemmed and then macerated for 24 hours on their skins. Finally, the wine was fermented in four different types of barrels: French oak, American oak, acacia and chestnut wood. The wine then ages for 8 months on its lees, employing the battonage process once a week

Morgenster 2005

COLOUR - Deep, concentrated burgundy red; reminiscent of heavy velvet drapes

NOSE - The first impression is clearly a lovely rich dark chocolate with attractive spicy support. There are nuances of black cherries, black berries and ripe plums

PALATE - Slightly candy coated tannins that create the impression of the interaction between fruit, acid and tannin. The black cherries on the nose come through to the palate as cherry kernels; marzipan and stone fruit. The finish is impressively long.

COLOUR Concentrated and vibrant; dark mulberry red

NOSE This wine carries a subtle perfume of wild flowers, sub-tropical fruit, cinnamon and vanilla oak spice

PALATE The palate senses black currants, liquorice and spice, a freshly integrated, balanced acid and tannin ratio with youthful expression. The tannins have a firm grip that show the long path of evolution ahead, but they are certainly neither clawy nor aggressive. The future bodes well for this 2005 vintage.

Quest Farm Vin Gris 2011

Tasting Note

Made from pinot noir grapes, the vin gris is hand picked and then pressed very gently on a champagne press cycle. The free run juice is separated from the pressed fruit and then fermented in small lots.  10% of pinot gris is then blended to enhance the back palate. The resulting wine is vibrant and refreshing with floral and pear aromas and crisp apple on the palate.

Made from Pinot Noir (90 per cent) and Pinot Gris (10 per cent) grapes, the 2011 vintage (****) is a Grigio-styled wine – meaning crisp and dry. Full of personality, it is mouthfilling, with fresh, vibrant, citrusy, slightly peachy and spicy flavours, woven with lively acidity, very good delicacy and concentration, and a scented bouquet. Rinascita 2010

Rinascita, which is the Italian word for "rebirth" and also a play on the Italian word for Renaissance (the period during which Tuscany excelled through its artistic and cultutal development), is made from the younger vines of Sangiovese on the RISECCOLI estate, with a small addition of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is "fruit-forward" in style, soft and graceful. Designed for early drinking, it will nonetheless show well over a period of 5 years. Medium-body and gentle with supple and attractive fruit.

Our Piccolo Verdot bottling is a rarity for Tuscany in being a 100% varietal. The 2006 vintage was RISECCOLI’s first release with this non-traditional mono-varietal. It is very dark ruby in colour with a complex nose. The palate is very fruity, rich and smooth with aromas of ripe berries and plums. Petit Verdot is recognised as a great ageing wine and ours should be no exception.

The Chocolate Block 2011

WINEMAKERS COMMENTS:

The 2011 Chocolate Block is a blend of Syrah (69%); Grenache Noir (14%); Cabernet Sauvignon (11%); Cinsault (5%) and Viognier (1%). This wine is the perfect example of identifying “undiscovered” parcels of vineyard with amazing potential and utilizing it to unleash its world class quality.

TASTING NOTES:

The influence of the Grenache’s red fruits on this wine is striking. The nose shows an abundance of redcurrant, plums, crushed rock, and an array of spices. The floral notes adds to its complexity. The freshness of the wine puts its head in front of the previous vintages. Spicy oak aromas cover a rounded mid-palate that reveals layers of fruit with intense purity. Textured, composed and seamless in style.

Trabucchi Amarone della Valpolicella DOC 2004

Amarone Trabucchi is made primarily with Corvina and Corvinone autochthonous varietals. Corvinone, brought to the appropriate degree of maturation, confers greater richness, a velvety texture and intense fruitiness to the wine. Other interesting varietals include Rondinella, reminiscent of cherries, Oseleta with its fresh acidity and good tannin content and Croatina that bestows a floral and fruity bouquet. The wine is a subdued red, with almost purple highlights. The scent recalls dried rose petals, followed by hints of plums, wild cherries and candied fruit.

Trabucchi Recioto della Valpolicella DOC 500ml 2005

"This year’s best sweet wine, the colour recalls deep waters full of black cherries and blackberries. Its exquisite sweetness, its coaxingly silken palate, its pristine contours and vividness, even more than its aroma, make it an absolute oenological and viticultural masterpiece. Bravo!  (Luca Maroni, Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani, 2010)"

Delicious to the taste, because the great fruity sweetness is perfectly freshened by a living, lively acidity, which gives a very pleasant sensation, because it dampens all sweeter, larger ones, bringing freshness and fragrance in the mouth, cleaning up perfectly from all sugary syrupy eventually tracks, thus giving a feeling of great composure of great finesse, elegance.
