THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE INDUSTRY In 1652 explorer Jan van Riebeek arrived at the Cape of Good Hope and instigated the planting of the first grape vines. Thus, South Africa has one foot in the Old World with over 350 years of winemaking history and the other in the New World. While South Africa was successful and highly regarded as a wine producing nation in the 60s and 70s, the "sanction years" harmed the industry and it has only recently begun to free itself of its Old World bias, government controlled export body and started producing wines that are once again attracting the attention of the wine world. The Cape Floral Kingdom is the smallest yet richest plant kingdom on earth. Recently declared a World Heritage Site, it is home to 9600 plant species and tens of thousands of animal species. This biodiversity is the result of a diverse range of Terroir, which are also the fundamental influence on the unique diversity and quality of wines from the Cape's vineyards. Today, the Western Cape boasts famous wine regions such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Constantia and Franschhoek while newer wine regions such as the Hemel en Aarde Valley, Elgin and Elim are being discovered and explored. Most of these regions are influenced by one of the two mighty oceans which meet at this Southern tip of Africa: the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. Maritime influences combined with a moderate Mediterranean climate, diverse soils and topography result in a diverse range of micro-climates that are ideal for wine grape growing. South Africa has its own grape variety, pinotage, the cross of cinsault and pinot noir. While this wine attracts attention, other varietal wines such as chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, shiraz, chardonnay as well as Bordeaux blends and dessert wines are making a name for themselves in the world. Wines from South Africa now regularly feature in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 wines and win awards in international wine competitions. Planet Wine offers wines from Paarl, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and the Hemel en Aarde Valley and will continue to source interesting quality wines from other regions. Ernie Els Big Easy 2011
Tasting Notes The Big Easy is rich and emphatic in 2011 and yet, as the name suggests, still holds an amazingly easy silkiness on the palate. The dominant Shiraz offers complex notes of rosemary and cured meat whilst the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a beguiling structure and sweet cherry fruit core. A playful tempo is created by dashes of Grenache, Viognier, Mourvèdre and Cinsault giving a fynbos and spicy edge along with a fragrant, almost honeycomb-like finish. View Full Details

Ernie Els Big Easy Chenin Blanc 2012
Tasting Note The second release of this very popular wine once again leaps from the glass with an extreme tropical vibrancy. A mélange of strawberry and pineapple flavours are all wound up by a limey-streak on the nose. Ernie Els Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Tasting Notes The 2011 is a brooding yet fine vintage. Pure-fruited cassis on the nose open to a fine balance of dark chocolate, wet earth, delicate spice and dried herbs. The palate has a dark inky intensity punched by a core of mineral finesse and all wrapped by a broad-shouldered finish. The tannins are burly and taught, but will easily integrate with time as this decadent Cabernet Sauvignon will age well for a decade. Serious yet sumptuous. View Full Details

Ernie Els Signature 2007
With a deep black core and bright ruby rim, the Ernie Els Signature 2007 is slightly more light-footed and open than the brooding 2006, but by no means evades its suave personality. The large Cabernet Sauvignon component dominates with rich blackcurrants, whilst the four other Bordeaux varieties contribute with exotic hints of mint, pencil shavings, dark olive and rosemary. Full bodied and punchy, the lushes tannic grip is reigned in by a tightly wound finish that seems endless. View Full Details

Of the 5 Bordeaux varieties, the Cabernet Franc adds lead pencil and mineral notes, with a hint of spicy oak sure to integrate with age. The palate is full-bodied and decadent, reminding one of a Belgian chocolate fondant with blackberry coulee. Etched, weighty tannins finally coat suave, lush and pure fruit complexity. Exquisitely balanced and long. View Full Details
