THE ITALIAN WINE INDUSTRY

When the Greeks colonized Italy, it was already known as Oenotria, the land of wine. This has not changed and only France produces more wine than Italy and that only in some years.

Basically the whole of Italy is wine country, with climates ranging from the cool and cold near the Alps all the way South to the heat of Sicily. Italy has made its name mainly through wines produced from its indigenous grapes: sangiovese and pinot grigio, rondinella and garganega, nebbiolo and moscato, amongst many others. These factors combine to allow Italy to produce highly distinctive wines which are appreciated all over the world. In more recent times, the warmer regions in the South have started producing wines in approachable New World styles. Also, in the 1970s, winegrowers started experimenting with merlot and cabernet sauvignon to add complexity to their sangiovese-based wines. These became knows as Super-Tuscan wines and now occupy the highest price points and gain the highest scores from wine magazines such as the Wine Spectator, Decanter and Wine Advocate.

The Riseccoli Estate is located in the Classico region of Chianti, the most renowned wine region of the 7 Chianti sub-regions. Their Super-Tuscan Saeculum di Riseccoli regularly attains over 90 points in reputable wine publications, their Riserva and standard Classico are more affordable but highly regarded and their rare Vin Santo is a delight of almonds, nuts, honey and apricots. Riseccoli also offer luxury accommodation in renovated farmhouses on the Estate. These can be viewed at www.quality-villas.co.uk under the "Italy" portfolio. They are called Villa Saeculum and La Riserva. Should you be interested in renting either of these, at preferential rates, please contact us at info@planetwine.co.nz. www.riseccoli.com

Roberto Anselmi, the owner and winemker of the Anselmi wines from the Soave region in Northern Italy is regarded as one of the leading white wine producers in Italy. His quest for quality above quantity has seen him clash horns with and step outside of the DOCG of Soave. www.robertoanselmi.com.

San Leonardo (established 1784) is rated as one of the Royal Family or Grand Cru producers of Italy.  The estate is based in Trentino, in the Northern part of Italy, near the Swiss border.  The cooler climate allows San Leonardo to produce Bordeaux-style wines of stunning quality and elegance.  www.sanleonardo.it

Rivetto dal 1902 is the most recent addition to the Planet Wine portfolio.  Rivetto is currently run by the 4th generation of the family.  They are located near Alba, South East of Torino and produce fine wines from the Piemonte region: Barolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Barbaresco and Nebbiolo as well as Moscato, a fine Barolo Grappa and the traditional Chinato.

Brunello di Montalcino 2004

The Brunello di Montalcino was one of the first wines that earned the designation DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) and was the first Italian wine that has earned the appellation DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). This wine is made exclusively from grapes of Sangiovese Grosso  and is truly exceptional in every aspect.  Importantly, the weather details and richness of calcareous clay soil give the grapes a unique flavor. Another important factor is the expertise that made the production in this region, respecting the characteristic wine maturation in large oak barrels for at least two years, and recently also in French Barriques. Here the production techniques are handed down from generation to generation

All processes of production, refinement and bottling must take place in the municipality of Montalcino. Respecting tradition, our Brunello matures in large oak casks. Our Brunello characteristics: intense ruby red, aging gets Orange tints, tending to garnet red; intense taste with aromas of cherry and raspberry, young but with significant presence of tannin, peculiarity of the tendril, rigorous ageing, elegant, refined and rich.

Rinascita, which is the Italian word for "rebirth" and also a play on the Italian word for Renaissance (the period during which Tuscany excelled through its artistic and cultutal development), is made from the younger vines of Sangiovese on the RISECCOLI estate, with a small addition of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is "fruit-forward" in style, soft and graceful. Designed for early drinking, it will nonetheless show well over a period of 5 years. Medium-body and gentle with supple and attractive fruit.

Tenuta di Riseccoli Piccolo Verdot 2009

Our Piccolo Verdot bottling is a rarity for Tuscany in being a 100% varietal. The Petit Verdot grape tends to ripen late in the season and is particularly well-suited to one of the most sun-exposed slopes on the estate. The 2006 vintage was RISECCOLI’s first release with this non-traditional mono-varietal. It is very dark ruby in colour with a complex nose. The palate is very fruity, rich and smooth with aromas of ripe berries and plums. Petit Verdot is recognised as a great ageing wine and ours should be no exception.

Trabucchi Amarone della Valpolicella DOC 2004

Amarone Trabucchi is made primarily with Corvina and Corvinone autochthonous varietals. Corvinone, brought to the appropriate degree of maturation, confers greater richness, a velvety texture and intense fruitiness to the wine. Other interesting varietals include Rondinella, reminiscent of cherries, Oseleta with its fresh acidity and good tannin content and Croatina that bestows a floral and fruity bouquet. The wine is a subdued red, with almost purple highlights. The scent recalls dried rose petals, followed by hints of plums, wild cherries and candied fruit.

Trabucchi Recioto della Valpolicella DOC 500ml 2005

"This year’s best sweet wine, the colour recalls deep waters full of black cherries and blackberries. Its exquisite sweetness, its coaxingly silken palate, its pristine contours and vividness, even more than its aroma, make it an absolute oenological and viticultural masterpiece. Bravo!  (Luca Maroni, Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani, 2010)"

Delicious to the taste, because the great fruity sweetness is perfectly freshened by a living, lively acidity, which gives a very pleasant sensation, because it dampens all sweeter, larger ones, bringing freshness and fragrance in the mouth, cleaning up perfectly from all sugary syrupy eventually tracks, thus giving a feeling of great composure of great finesse, elegance.
